William K. Bates of Springfield and Fairfax, Virginia, husband of Doris Robertson Bates passed away at the age of 96, on Tuesday, July 11, 2017. Bill Bates was a beloved husband and father. Born on September 8, 1920, in Abington, Pa. He is survived by his wife Doris, three children from his first wife Barbara: William A. (Diane), Barbara Kercher (John), Bradford (Sharon) and four grandsons and four great grandsons. He is predeceased by his parents Charles and Bessie Bates, two brothers Charles and Edward, four sisters Elizabeth (Betty), Beatrice, Helen, Doris and his first wife Barbara Herkness Bates. In 1942 he graduated Penn State University and immediately join the US Marines in the Pacific Theater during WWII. In 1945 he returned home to marry his first wife Barbara and start his 34 year career with Sears Roebuck & Co. He held several management positions throughout the northeast until in 1965 he was appointed store manager to open the Sears at Landmark Center in Alexandria VA where he remained until his retirement in 1980. Bill also enjoyed spending time at his cabin that he designed and built, fishing, woodworking, and traveling the world. He was member of Providence Presbyterian Church in Fairfax, VA and the community of the Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring in Chambersburg, PA. Services will be held at Providence Presbyterian Church (9019 Little River Turnpike, Fairfax, VA) at 2:00pm on Wednesday July 19th and at Falling Spring Presbyterian Church in Chambersburg, PA at 1:00pm on Saturday July 22. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the respective churches or Hospice.
