Obituary for Calvin B. Umble

Dr. Calvin Benjamin Umble of Chambersburg died on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 5:15 p.m. in Chambersburg Hospital.
Born February 2, 1924 in Gap (Lancaster County), Pennsylvania, Dr. Umble was the son of the late Elam H. and Anna (Kauffman) Umble.
He and his family moved to Chambersburg in 1967 when he became partner in the Chambersburg Animal Hospital, the veterinary practice of Dr. John J. Strickler. Prior to joining the Chambersburg practice, Dr. Umble practiced independently in Honey Brook (Chester County), Pennsylvania from 1951 to 1964; from 1964 to 1967 he performed research pathology for Rutgers State University in their Vineland, New Jersey facilities. He completed studies at Franklin and Marshall College (Lancaster, PA), and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (Philadelphia, PA). He was a member of the Franklin County Veterinary Association and demonstrated a life-long love of animals.
Dr. Umble was active in local church, civic, and cultural organizations. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring where he served as an elder and was a member of the choir. He served as chair of the Museum Committee with the Franklin County Historical Society-Kittochtinny, and as a volunteer docent guided tours of the Old Franklin County Jail and Museum. He served on the board in the formative years of the Institute of Retired Persons, and was an early director of the Franklin County Tourist Council. He was an avid student of the American Civil War. A veteran of World War II, having served with the 406th Regiment, 102nd Infantry Division, Dr. Umble was awarded the Purple Heart for action in Germany. He was honorably discharged from the Army in April 1945. He is remembered for his sense of humor and as one who took an interest in all people; he was a quiet, constant source of encouragement to his family, and many friends and acquaintances.
Dr. Umble is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Mary Jane Walker Umble, daughter of the late J. Earl Walker and Sidnie Thomas Walker of Gap, Pennsylvania. They were married on July 8, 1950, and have three sons: Christopher Walker Umble, and his wife Linda L. Lackey of Gibsonia, Pennsylvania; Dr. James Calvin Umble, and his wife Dr. Kathryn Thomas Umble, of Poland, Ohio; and Dr. Karl Edmund Umble, of Durham, North Carolina; former daughter-in-law Susan Keeler Umble of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; three grandchildren: Courtney L. (Umble) Hartzel (Justin)of Mars, Pennsylvania, Lauren E. Umble, of Alexandria, Virginia, and John A. Umble, of Poland, Ohio. He is also survived by a brother, R.
